Media Archeology: Tara Mateik & Shana Moulton

Aurora Picture Show & DiverseWorks Present: Media Archeology

Saturday, April 19, 2008
Tara Mateik & Shana Moulton
8pm

In 'Putting the Balls Away,' (above pic) Tara Mateik reenacts the legendary 'Battle of the Sexes,' Billie Jean King's 1973 defeat of the former Wimbledon men's champion, Bobby Riggs. By playing both roles in a video version of the match, and reviving remarks by sports commentators Howard Cosell and Rosie Casals, Mateik recalls the controversy sparked by the most watched televised sporting event of the era.

Shana Moulton will play her character, Cynthia, the fictional protagonist in her Whispering Pines series of videos. Moulton will bring Cynthia and her strange world to life through an innovative use of sets, props, costume and projected video. Combining live-action and projected video, Moulton describes her performance as presenting "a series of home-made and found orthopedic devices, cosmetics and belief systems." Moulton's presentation will at different points approximate a personal growth workshop, dance recital, instructional video and fairytale.

Doors open at 7:15pm
Tickets are $8 in advance, or $12 at the door

Media Archeology is Aurora Picture Show's annual multimedia festival that features artists who incorporate audio/visual technology with live performance. Each year, Media Archeology focuses on a different sub-genre of technology-based performance, and this year the theme is Live & Televised--live actors who perform with pre-recorded video and audio. The pre-recorded elements create a mise-en-scene of projected sets, props, and environments and provide additional pre-recorded actors -- sometimes creating a stage, soundtrack or entire cast.

Curated by Andrea Grover and Nick Hallett, Media Archeology is a collaboration between Mitchell Center for the Arts at University of Houston, KTRU-FM, Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, and Diverseworks.
